FAQ

Why should i hire a professional genealogist?

For many people, this is a matter of time. Others want to learn about their ancestors but don’t have the patience or desire to do the research themselves. Some have made progress on their own but they need a fresh pair of experienced eyes to solve a vexing problem.

Professional genealogists have expert knowledge of sources, where to find them, how to use them, and their limitations. We are able to quickly organize information, analyze problems, create research plans, efficiently carry out research, assemble results, and write reports. We keep up-to-date with advanced research methods, the availability of records, and the role DNA test results play in genealogy research.

how much does it cost?

Reviewing the information and documents you provide, creating a research plan, conducting research, analyzing evidence, writing reports, preparing charts, and explaining results are billed at $75 per hour. Expenses are billed separately. Common additional expenses include copies of vital records, in-person visits to archives and other repositories (travel expenses, parking, admission fees, microfilm rental fees, etc.), and document translation services.

what forms of payment do you accept?

Invoices are sent by e-mail and due upon receipt. U.S. checks, ACH bank transfers, debit cards, American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa and Zelle are accepted for payment.

how long does genealogy research usually take?

This depends on what we’re investigating as well as the time period, place, and availability of resources. Our partnership begins with a review of the information and documents you have. After we identify your goals, we’ll have a better idea of how long the research will take. Research can be done in stages, based on your needs and your budget. We will target research to make the most of my time and your money. Most projects require at least 10 research hours. The overall time from beginning to end will vary based on a number of factors. Before I begin the research, we will discuss the estimated timing, and you will always know the status of your project.

how will i know these are my people?

I carefully trace people using the details that distinguish them from others, such as birth date, birthplace, street address, town, occupation, religious affiliation, marital status, military status, physical description, family structure, family naming patterns, and unique names. Research will be clearly documented and will indicate if a detail or conclusion is possible, likely, probable, or certain.
